The
Hilton San Diego Airport/Harbor Island is a
good example of a successful property conversion project. The
property had originally been built in the late 1960's as an economy
class hotel. Its floor plan was a typical design for this type
project during that era. During the years, the building had fallen
into some disrepair and its economic value greatly decreased.
However, due to the hotels location on a waterway as well as its
proximity to the San Diego Airport, the owner desired to convert
the property into a new upgraded Hilton. The project consisted of a complete renovation of all interior spaces, new concepting for the guestrooms, lobby and restaurant, plus a new two story addition for additional meeting room space. The exterior was also refurbished as well as extensive work on the buildings mechanical system.
The design concept called for a casual California style with some acknowledgement of the waterfront location. Colors and material were kept light and airy while still maintaining the upgraded appearance required to meet Hilton standards. Once open, the project began a new life as an income producing property instead of a drain on the clients building portfolio.
